Built in 1913 by the Raja of Sahaspur Bilari, this European mansion served as a guest house for the erstwhile Governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh, Sir James Scorgie Meston. Much later, the mansion hosted eminent men and women from across the world. During WWII, the house was home to Italian officers captured by the British Army.
Post the war, it became the town residence of the Rani before the current heir decided to share his heritage with curious travellers.
Here, the technicolour rooms will welcome you in, a posh library with rare editions will call out, ancient chandeliers will twinkle upon you, mustachioed ancestors will greet you from ancient frames adorning the walls and the nostalgic royal rooms will ensure a good night’s sleep.
Take in the charming medley of colonial with a hint of princely India here. Live like royalty.
This Unhotel has an eclectic mix of six grandiose suites – each with technicolour and geometric wallpapers and elegant minimalistic furnishings while the original flooring is kept intact. Quite akin to a Wes Anderson set, with hints of antique fittings here and there.
All rooms are named after a gem including Amber, Jade and Moonstone. The hosts have ensured that all modern amenities minus the television, air-conditioners, kettle and mini fridge are concealed from view so as to retain the old world charm.
The bathrooms are exquisite with their swanky shower cubicles and modern fittings – the old bathtubs have been replaced.
Please note that a full rental of the whole villa for a private retreat with upto 14 guests can be arranged.
The Imperial Hideout is technically a B&B; so expect to get pampered with delicious home cooked food served in the lavish dining room, giving meaning to the phrase ‘Breakfast fit for a king’. Breakfast is included in the tariff. Lunch and dinner are extra. Room service is unavailable.
This Unhotel offers free WiFi throughout the premises. Guests can avail of free parking facilities. There is a seasonal swimming pool to cool off after a hot day. A spa is in the works.
Relax in the pretty lawns, next to the water-lily pond with intimate little sitting spots and forget the bustling town outside.
An Uncommon Stay experience in a bustling old industrial town within 4 hours from Delhi. A charmingly lavish old world sanctuary cocooned in the midst of lush foliage. A dream-like royal oasis that exudes nostalgia for a bygone era and yet has all the modern amenities.
For those who love history and nostalgia. The ones who would appreciate a few days in a tranquil and luxurious hideout of elegant design; fit for the kings and the nobility of British India. For the writers, artists, creative mavens ready to be holed up for a royal experience. Couples looking for an uncommon, luxurious, quiet hideaway close to Delhi, you could try this out.
Not for those who thrive on the luxuries of a modern 5 star hotel. This is not a scenic retreat either. If you hate the idea of a hideout bang in the middle of a bustling town, then give the Imperial Hideout a pass. Definitely not for the pocket conscious traveller.
