Our Shekhawati road trip (multiple trips starting October), is a journey into the neglected heritage and lost opulence of the Shekhawati region in Rajasthan. Once a bustling trade zone in the early 18th century, it is now an abandoned corner of Rajasthan. There are more than 2000 havelis scattered across Shekhawati which comprises of districts of Jhunjhunu, Nagaur, Sikar and Churu in the North West of Rajasthan.
The lavish yet forgotten mansions occupy prominent places amidst the chaos of rural Rajasthan. They have withstood the times to tell the tales of prosperity. Havelis represent vivid imagination of wealthy Marwari merchants who flaunted their wealth and lifestyle through ornate decorations on the walls of their gigantic homes. You will be fascinated to find trains and victorian chariots next to paintings of gods and goddesses. Jesus and Anarkali can be seen side by side English memsahibs dressed in Victorian costumes. The frescos seem to transcend all the boundaries of centuries of timelines.
On this road trip we will help you explore the haveli heritage of Shekhawati coupled with Marwari hospitality. There will be plenty of time to relax, unwind and listen to the stories of haveli caretakers who are eager to narrate glorious past tales of mansions buzzing with traders, cargoes and large families engaging in festivities. We will go on leisure walks, indulge in local gastronomy, take tuk tuk rides to meet award winning artisans and immerse in Rajasthani traditions. Leisure stroll on the streets of Ramgarh and Churu is like a time travel into the 19th century.

Soak in the history at a revived Marwari mansion ‘The Art House’ in Churu. Once the guesthouse of the Maharaja of Bikaner, this century-old haveli is a gateway to Rajasthan’s abandoned corner. ‘The Art House’ is a unique combination of Shekhawati’s famous fresco paintings with European pillared architecture, Italian art-deco influences and Mughal style doors and arches. Restored in 2005, the haveli contains rooms which exude elegance and opulence of Marwari traditions.
Shekhawati’s open air gallery containing restored, preserved, unrestored havelis and chattris of famous families of Imperial India. Though almost all the havelis in Shekhawati haven fallen into ruins and family feuds, visiting Shekhawati is like a treasure hunt exploring the lost opulence of Marwari merchants!
While enjoying the luxury of the unique heritage hotel, you would be served rich Rajasthani delicacies prepared by the chef at the Unhotel – The Art House.
