Get up close and personal with wildlife at this Unhotel located on the banks of the Rapti River, just outside the World Heritage-listed Chitwan National Park in Nepal. ‘Serenity by the River’ truly reflects the quietude of the National Park.
Lose yourself to refined luxury in the panoramic jungles; hear the babbling of the river, the chatter of the water birds, the roar of the tiger and the rumble of the jungle. Bond with nature in these undulating savannahs and leave the worries of the world behind.
The lodge has 34 cottages and one suite, all of which are air-conditioned. The ambience and style of the interiors reflect the aboriginal Tharu culture of Nepal and the wildlife of Chitwan. Local bamboo, sustainable wood and Nepali artifacts embellish the interiors of the rooms.
While 28 cottages are individual, the remaining six are interconnected but allow for enough privacy. Each cottage opens up to a private balcony with amazing views of the jungle and the Rapti River.
The ultra-luxurious suite is actually a private villa that offers vintage luxury in the confines of nature. The suite has two magnificent bedrooms, each with a dining room and a personal bar along with a private wooden terrace extending into a campfire place and a private swimming pool. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the villa offer gorgeous landscape views of the flowing river and the grasslands.
The culinary experience at ‘Serenity by the River’ is to die for. This lodge offers authentic Nepalese cuisine made with organically grown healthy ingredients, topped with Himalayan herbs and homemade pickle. Delectable Continental, Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes are also on the menu.
There is a welcoming bar on the premises, well-equipped to serve aperitif-spirits, wines and liqueurs.
Each room has TVs with satellite connection; although we request to use them as little as possible. There is an in-house spa offering customised treatments for excursions and jungle fatigue.
The lodge has a laundry service and the private suite even has a butler service.
Chitwan is paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and this Unhotel prides itself in providing a holistic wildlife and cultural experience with in-house naturalists to guide the guests along the way.
At ‘Serenity by the River’, enjoy a day with elephants. Guests can feed, bathe and spend time understanding these amazing pachyderms with well trained guides and mahouts. Guests can also go on nature walks to unravel the secrets of the woods along with naturalists.
For those who love water, canoeing is a great activity on the Rapti River. Look out for rhinos wallowing in the water or crocodiles hiding in plain sight. For the less adventurous, boat safaris are a good option too.
Guests can also go on elephant and jeep safaris in the riverine Chitwan National park. Watch out for wildlife like sloth bears, Bengal tigers, leopards and rhinoceros and birds like the lesser-adjutant stork, the black-crested bulbul, the bird-headed goose and more.
For those who love culture, this lodge hosts cultural performances of the Nepali Tharu dance performed by locals. Guests are encouraged to interact. You can also visit a nearby village on a bullock cart and explore stretches of farmlands and ancestral homes.
‘Serenity by the River’ is a perfect mix of Nepalese tradition meets a luxury jungle lodge. It is an eco-friendly lodge with unhotel aesthetics, great comfort and delicious food.
