Behind a panorama of unusual granite rock formations lies this camp, calling out the tired traveller like an oasis in the middle of the desert. At night, these rocks look mystical, bathed in moonlight, a hunting ground for the maneater.
Venture out in the wee hours of the morning to try and spot the ever elusive leopard; watch the endangered Great Indian Bustard in its natural habitat and be welcomed in the homes of tribal villagers nearby.
Wake up in the mornings to sounds of the nearby village, the smell of hay and the embers of last night’s fire still sizzling.
Here, man lives in harmony with the wild.
The hosts, who belong to the Royal House of Marwar, keep conservation near to their heart and have assisted many agencies in saving endangered species like the Great Indian Bustard and the blackbuck; helped underprivileged women in Himachal Pradesh and given employment to many local folk.
Managed mostly by natives from villages nearby, Adventure in the Wild has two lodges and three deluxe twin sharing shikar tents with bathrooms, designed after 1920s safari lodges – simple yet sufficient. Extra beds can be arranged at a cost.
Enjoy simple vegetarian Rajasthani home-grown food made by locals nonetheless. Guests can also enjoy a barbeque in the evenings along with a tribal dance display and a bonfire.
In keeping with the sustainable nature of the camp, there is no electricity inside the tents. Only the office and kitchen run on electricity where there are also charging points available. Naturally, there is no Wifi available here either although mobile service works.
But even without electricity, there is lots to do here at this wilderness Unhotel. In fact, guests can volunteer and help the local community. Apart from safaris, activities include farming, teaching hygiene and sanitation, art and craft skills, how to take care of livestock, hospitality, workshops on conducting safaris, learning to camp, learning local cooking methods and many more.
Guests can also go on one of the many guided and solo cycling treks, horse safaris, adivasi tribesmen safaris and more here. This Unhotel also organises tailor-made tours for those who want to venture into wilderness trips around Rajasthan.
A unique retreat right where the action is. An eco-friendly lodge and tented accommodation with simple aesthetics, great comfort and delicious food. It is a place to discover yourself amidst wildlife. It is a place where conservation meets tourism.
People looking for a adventurous weekend getaway in the midst of nature. Whose idea of a relaxed holiday is getting closer to flora and fauna, especially for families with children. The ones who prefer safaris and volunteering in villages over more urban adventures.
People who are not particularly fond of wildlife, adventure or camping and who cannot stay without technology or rough it out without electricity, they can give Adventure in the Wild a a total miss. This is not for the luxury or conventional comfort seeker.
